NBA Players And Coach Part Of Gambling And Sports Betting Investigation
A sweeping federal investigation into gambling and corruption involving current and former NBA players, a current head coach, and the mafia has highlighted the rapid growth of sports betting, a form of gambling, and its dangers.
Overnight, news broke that current Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncy Billups, former player and assistant coach Damon Jones, and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier had been arrested for their involvement in illegal gambling schemes. Federal prosecutors gave further information in their morning press conference, where they announced indictments against 30+ individuals connected to two separate but related gambling schemes: a rigged poker game operation and an insider sports betting operation involving professional basketball players.
FBI Director Kash Patel said that the schemes spanned multiple years and involved tens of millions of dollars in illicit gains from gambling, money laundering, wire fraud, and extortion. As the NBA confronts the fallout, critics highlight how this controversy exposes the connection between sports, betting, and its addictive potential.
Billups Involved In Mafia-Affiliated Poker Scheme
Officials announced that Billups, an NBA Hall of Famer, was charged with helping to lure players to poker games with the promise of playing against celebrities. These rigged games took place in Miami, Las Vegas, and New York, where technology like fraudulent card shufflers and x-ray tables were used to scam players out of thousands of dollars. Damon Jones was also connected to this ring.
According to prosecutors, this scheme also involved members of well-known mafia families in New York, who control the underground poker games where the rigging took place. The mafia was said to take a cut of the profits while using extortion and robbery to collect unpaid debts.
Damon And Rozier’s Inside Sports Betting Scandal
According to federal prosecutors, Rozier provided inside information about his own situation and playing time to accomplices who would then place bets based on that knowledge. In one instance, he tipped off insiders that he would be leaving a game early due to an “injury”, which led to his coconspirators placing more than $200,000 for his prop bets (a wager on a specific event or performance within a game) that night.
In connection with Rozier, Jones and Rozier are said to have used their insider knowledge to leak secret information about the NBA and specific players. They would use their insider information, like knowing of a player’s injury or illness before it had been made public, to place hundreds of thousands of bets through online sports books and casinos.
The NBA has placed Rozier and Billups on leave while the investigation takes place.
Sports Betting Becoming Increasingly Popular
While the charges against Jones and Rozier are unique in scale, they expose a wider concern: that the rapid expansion of sports betting could have far-reaching and devastating effects. Since the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports gambling in 2018, sports betting has become a mainstream form of entertainment and a major source of revenue for leagues and media companies.
At least 38 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico now allow commercial sports betting in some form.
In particular, sports betting has seen a sharp increase thanks to the rise of online platforms and mobile apps, like DraftKings Sportsbook and FanDuel Sportsbook, which make it easier than ever for people to wager on games and outcomes. This widespread accessibility has contributed to a surge in problem gambling and gambling addiction, as betting behaviors can quickly become compulsive.
A Pew Research Center survey found that 1 in 10 U.S. adults have placed an online sports bet in the past year.
As with most addictions, betting habits often begin casually but quickly develop as a person either chases losses or becomes dependent on the thrill of winning. However, the financial, emotional, and social effects of gambling addiction are far-reaching and can range from gambling debt and strained relationships to mental health problems.
Critics claim that the normalization of sports betting through advertisements and celebrity endorsements helps mask the risks. They also warn that the constant ads and in-app betting prompts can fuel compulsive behaviors, especially among younger audiences, with advocacy groups noting that hotline calls for gambling addiction have risen sharply since the expansion of online sportsbooks. While gambling addiction is a multifaceted disorder, scandals like this expose the widespread effects that risky gambling can cause.
