Drug and Alcohol Abuse Trends in Juneau, Alaska

The capital city of Alaska, Juneau, is home to approximately 31,276 residents. Located in the Alaskan panhandle, the Greater Juneau Borough is larger in land mass than Rhode Island and Delaware with less than a thirtieth of those states’ populations. Many Alaskans live in small, close-knit communities or in isolation, making it incredibly difficult to get treatment for a substance use disorder. Moreover, the stigma of reaching out for help can prevent someone in desperate need of it from taking the necessary steps to detox.

The most common addiction issues in the Juneau area include:

The rate of opioid-related overdoses in Alaska was lower than the national average in 2016 (12.5 compared to 13.3 deaths per 100,000 people). Yet, that number was a sharp increase from 8.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2010. Unfortunately, opioid abuse is higher in areas like Juneau due to prescribing rates for prescription opioids (such as oxycodone and hydrocodone). In Juneau specifically, there were 25 opioid-related overdoses between 2013 and 2017, equal to 15 deaths per 100,000 people. In early 2016, 6 people died of heroin overdose in Juneau–equivalent to nearly 800 people fatally overdosing in Los Angeles in mere months.

Addiction Treatment in Juneau

Separated by thousands of miles of northern wilderness, Alaska’s biggest cities are nearly equidistant from megalopolises like New York; Frankfurt, Germany; and Tokyo, Japan. Subsequently, finding addiction treatment can be challenging. However, drug and alcohol rehabs are available in the area and offer a range of detox services (including outpatient drug rehab and medication-assisted treatment). Additionally, the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence maintains a presence in the city to help fight addiction.
