Drug Abuse Trends in Miramar, FL

Miramar, Florida, sits partway between major cities, Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Originally built as a “bedroom community” in Broward County, Miramar is home to 122,041 residents and predominantly consists of residential neighborhoods. As such, a number of marijuana grow houses and illegal drug manufacturing organizations are hidden amongst normal-looking houses. Moreover, officers report serving narcotics warrants to enter homes every day of the year.

The most common substances of abuse in Miramar are:

Alcohol is a major concern for most Floridians; the substance was present in approximately half of drug-related deaths in the state in 2016. Fortunately, rates of underage drinking have fallen in Broward County (by 60%). Conversely, rates of marijuana use climbed 60% among adolescents younger than 18. In fact, 87% of Broward County minors entering addiction treatment cited marijuana as the primary drug of abuse.

Cocaine and Heroin Use in Miramar

During the First and Second Waves of the opioid epidemic, Florida came to be known as a “pill mill” state. Doctors prescribed thousands of prescription opioids unchecked, allowing addiction to spread equally unchecked. Broward County dispensed over 5.2 million units of oxycodone between October 2008 and March 2009. Consequently, by 2016, Broward County suffered 10 opioid-related deaths a week in addition to 17 non-fatal overdoses.

Furthermore, cocaine-related deaths are on the rise as more people abuse multiple drugs simultaneously. Some people believe mixing drugs like cocaine (a stimulant) and heroin (a depressant) produces bigger highs or that one cancels the effects of the other. However, this combination (known as a speedball) greatly increases an individual’s risk of fatal overdose and permanent brain damage.

Cocaine users are 15 times more likely to have a co-occurring heroin addiction. Of the most common drugs co-abused alongside cocaine, opioids represented 3 of the top 5 (morphine, heroin, and fentanyl in that order).

Addiction Treatment in Miramar

Miramar is ideally-situated for individuals looking for a drug and alcohol rehab center. Some of the world’s premier addiction treatment facilities are located in south Florida, with a wide range of therapies and luxury amenities available. Still, because of the proliferation of addiction in the area, a variety of rehab and detox centers cater to different types of substance use disorder.

Increasingly, treatment centers are focusing on combatting poly-drug use (including injection drug use) with medication assisted treatment and cognitive behavioral therapy. Addiction treatment medications like buprenorphine and methadone can reduce cravings and the pain of withdrawal. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps patients develop new coping mechanisms as well as recognize past traumas that can cause addiction.
