Opioid Addiction in Atlanta

Many people in Atlanta suffer from opioid abuse and addiction. 7.8 million opioids were prescribed in Georgia in 2015, of which a large percentage were in Atlanta. Atlanta has seen increasing death rates from Opioid overdose. Most of these deaths were specifically due to heroin and fentanyl. Many people accidentally overdose from heroin, as dealers often lace the drug with fentanyl, which is 30 to 50 times more powerful.

Although Atlanta has historically been more associated with cocaine use, fentanyl is increasing in popularity. Various forms of fentanyl known as acrylfentanyl are becoming more available, as are other opioids.  For example, fake percocet overdoses are on the rise. Other drugs like oxycodone and hydrocodone are also used and sold in counterfeit form, and the consumption of these drugs is the leading cause of deaths in people under the age of 50.

Young Suburban Sufferers and Atlanta Opioid Addiction

Like most major cities, there are specific neighborhoods in Atlanta where drug abuse, supply, and demand are higher than others. The Bluff is a well-known neighborhood notorious for heroin use and supply, often drawing young substance abusers. People in the Bluff have witnessed many young people overdosing on heroin, many of whom are white males. The growing number of deaths is drawing attention to the rising rates of heroin use among young people.

Another neighborhood facing increases in drug addiction is known as “the Triangle.”  The Triangle, which is located between the highways 75 and 895 in Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties, has witnessed a 3953 percent increase in heroin abuse in recent years. The Triangle is expanding, causing much concern for the city of Atlanta.

Like drug-related overdoses in the Bluff, many of those suffering drug-related overdoses in the Triangle are young men and women. High-performing high school students who were involved in the community and made good grades were some of the many reported heroin overdoses in the Triangle. Many victims are young adults aged 18 to 25, who have reported a dependence on pain killers and are more vulnerable to heroin overdose.

Treatment for Drug Abuse in Atlanta

Going through drug withdrawal unsupervised is not recommended, as many uncomfortable side effects can occur. If you need help with substance abuse, you are not alone. Take the first step and contact a treatment professional.

Inpatient rehab facilities are the most intensive and hands-on support available for patients struggling with addiction. Patients enter a facility and connect with staff members. Facilities also give patients access to medication to reduce substance cravings while encouraging spiritual healing. Patients learn techniques such as meditation to create calming mind-body experiences and gain opportunities to connect with peers.

Outpatient rehab offers weekly treatment sessions, similar therapy options offered in inpatient rehab facilities, and counseling. Outpatient rehab allows patients to gain treatment while balancing responsibilities of everyday life. Day programs allow those in recovery to meet a few days a week as they get involved in ongoing therapy. Many facilities offer flexible payment methods and accept health insurance.

Traveling from Atlanta for Rehab

People who are considering staying local for rehab can benefit by having family and friends support them on their journey. Some facilities encourage family members to visit patients in rehab. Other benefits to staying local for treatment include flexible payment options unique to local patients.

However, many patients find the greatest recovery success by traveling outside the state for inpatient rehab. When they travel, they are away from stressful reminders of addiction and can be fully immersed in top-notch client care. When patients travel for rehab, they are focused on the journey to healing, as the distance reinforces the seriousness of taking responsibility of one’s addiction.
