Opioids in Overland Park, Kansas

In 2016, Kansas reported one of the highest rates of opioid prescriptions in the country. Reports show the rate as 98.5 prescriptions per 100 people. For the past 14 years, Kansas has consistently had a higher prescription rate than the US at large. Overland Park has joined the growing number of state and local governments beginning to sue opioid manufacturers for their role in the opioid crisis.

The Overland Park DEA continued their prescription drug take-back initiative in 2018 as a measure to cut down on the amount of opioids floating around in the community. In one year, they managed to collect nearly 1,800 pounds of prescription medication. Their total from 2011-2018 ended up being 18,775 pounds of prescription drugs.

Methamphetamines in Overland Park

Overland Park struggles with opioids like many other cities, but crystal meth seems to be particularly problematic. The rate of federal sentencing related to crystal meth use in Kansas more than doubles the national average.

Violence that relates to the distribution and use of methamphetamines have also troubled Overland Park. Gangs like The Crips and Gangster Disciples have trafficked and distributed methamphetamines through Overland Park since the 90s.

Alcohol in Overland Park

Johnson County, where Overland Park is located, is reporting abnormally high levels of binge drinking among residents. The population is wealthier than surrounding counties, which enables them to support their drinking habits for longer before it becomes truly problematic. While social demeanor and legal restrictions create a buttoned up façade in Johnson County, many people report struggling with drinking problems that are beginning to spiral out of their control.

Rehab Options

As researchers and treatment professionals learn more about addiction, the more effectively they’re able to treat it. Many specific techniques and treatments exist within rehabilitation practices, but there are 2 major types of care implemented throughout addiction treatment.

Inpatient Rehabilitation

People enrolled in inpatient rehab programs spend a predetermined amount of time living at a facility where their primary goal is to recover and heal from whatever is causing them trouble. Oftentimes, these facilities offer food and entertainment options alongside the regular therapy sessions. With the client living at a location where treatment professionals can monitor them and control what they have access to, it can some hurdles to rehabilitation are removed.

Outpatient Rehabilitation

Outpatient rehab clients will live on their own while enrolled in treatment. This type of program offers more flexibility for people who can’t take significant amounts of time off from their day-to-day lives in order to heal.

Some programs will start a client in inpatient rehab, transition them to outpatient, provide them with some aftercare options, and let them continue their journey on their own. The risk of outpatient treatment is that it doesn’t control the behavior of someone seeking treatment, which may predispose them to problems staying on track.
