Drug and Alcohol Addiction in Detroit, Michigan

Detroit has recently re-won the title as “America’s most dangerous big city.” With its extreme crime rates and crowded streets, drug abuse and addiction are sure to be a contributing factor to its abundance of crimes. There were 27,979 substance abuse treatment admissions in Michigan in 2014. Out of 276 cities within Michigan, 7.7% of these admissions came from Detroit alone.

The city of Detroit and the state of Michigan have agreed something must be done to resolve these issues. They have determined that one way to get over the drug epidemic is to develop programs for citizens to achieve sobriety through provided treatment. Because these problems are blended and intensified throughout the country, the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (SAPT) Block Grant was created to help each state fund treatment for their civilians.

Treatment Services Offered in Michigan

Michigan has several programs for treatment, though which ones any individual is eligible for depends on certain categories.

Women Specialty Services

Women Specialty Services cater to women in need of substance abuse disorder treatment, especially if they are pregnant or have dependent children.

Some services provided for women include:

Other services Michigan offers to residents include:

  • Screening Tools
  • Treatment for Professionals
  • Integrated Treatment for Co-occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders

Angel Program

Drug abuse and admissions are fluctuating year after year, with heroin being the leading drug of concern for residents of Detroit. In an attempt to decrease drug use and remedy initial behaviors resulting in arrest, the Angel Program was set in place. As a pre-arrest diversion program put in motion October 2016, the program was designed for those struggling with addiction that want to seek help without the fear of being questioned or arrested.

More people in Michigan die from drug overdoses than car crashes, and the Angel Program is one way the Michigan State Police is helping to reduce drug demand and serve those struggling with this deadly addiction.

The program is held at MSP posts all over Michigan and is very operational in Detroit. Addicts can seek help by visiting a post from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. As of last December, 37 people have already been treated by the program. The Angel Program allows individuals a second chance at life thanks to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans. They are always accepting volunteers and donations to keep the program running.

Detroit Recovery Project Incorporated (DRP)

DRP was developed by concerns of parents who previously abused drugs that did not want to see the exhausting and detrimental fate that comes with drug abuse for their children. With help from state, local, and community level agencies, the foundation was created to help Detroit citizens receive the treatment and care they need to get their lives back on track. DRP is a non-profit foundation and supports anyone in the Detroit area seeking out treatment.

DRP is governed by holistic health services and offers a wide variety of treatment methods including:

  • Daily Support Groups
  • 12-Step Meetings
  • Meditation/Spirituality
  • Workshops
  • Life Skill Teachings

Housing assistance is also provided to participants of the program, although there is no mention of providing detox services, which is ultimately the first step in getting over an addiction.

Trends of Drug Abuse in Detroit

In 2013 alone, Detroit reported 7,464 cases of drug possession. Considering this is just what was reported from seized items, the number of unknown abuse cases is much higher. Reported statistics show an increasing trend of males as the majority of patients admitted to a facility for treatment, with middle-aged adults as the majority of abusers.

Trends for drug abuse in the first half of fiscal year 2014 according to seized substances are as follows:

Substance Number of Cases
Heroin 1,330
Alcohol 1,248
Cocaine 533
Marijuana 405
Opioids 85
Other Substances 10
Total 3,611
